Are you working out hard enough?

The path to really changing your body, mind and health is learning to experience your performance from a neutral observer perspective. That doesn’t mean you can’t have moments of defeat and feeling down, but it’s crucial to cultivate the ability to look at both results and performance objectively to really answer that question. And it’s a question for which the answer is always changing (and excludes any medical conditions or injuries). Here are a few ways you can answer this question:

1. Are you working out in class to a point where you have to recover your heart rate.

On the bag side, every round. On the floor side, most rounds. If you’re not really getting your heart rate up (excluding certain medical conditions), you’re likely not working out hard enough.

Your heart rate should be through the roof on at least half of the rounds in class.

2. Are you lifting weights to failure?

If you’re able to complete every rep of every round, you’re not lifting heavily enough. Your muscles only change on the reps that you can barely or not finish. Did you know that? Finding the right weight that challenges you to near-failure is crucial. Or you’re not likely to see results.

3. Are you working to your max that day?

Sometimes all you have to give is 40% and that makes 40% your 100%. This is a tough concept for most people because most people never think they’re working hard enough. So instead, they work too hard on days where their body doesn’t really have it.

4. Are you punching hard and moving the bag?

Boxing is interesting because it’s one of the most efficient kinds of cardio you can do. AND it’s tricky because how hard you work is completely up to you. If you’re not hammering the bag, making it move, using your muscles to punch and getting out of breath, you can do more.

That’s like going out for a super fancy steak dinner on your credit card because you haven’t been paid yet. It’s going to end up costing you more and doing more harm than good.

Because so many people are shame driven when it comes to fitness, it can be hard to really objectively assess whether or not you’re working out hard enough.

Checking in with these three questions and bringing neutrality and honesty to them is crucial to be able to see where you actually can do more.

If you’re not sure - ask a coach to keep an eye on you in class.

P.S. If you’re working out consistently but your diet is all over the place, you’re going to likely be trying to overcompensate for your diet by working infinitely harder in class. This is a recipe for burnout. You can’t outbox or outrun your fork.
